Moringa oleifera — the miracle tree grows prolifically across Mashonaland, fruiting year-round in Zimbabwe's subtropical climate. Leaves are hand-picked at peak maturity, dried in the shade to protect heat-sensitive vitamins, and stone-ground immediately after drying. The bright green colour is the indicator of quality a pale or yellowish powder has been compromised by sun-drying or poor storage.

The baobab (Adansonia digitata) — called mawuyu in Shona and umkhomo in Ndebele — is Zimbabwe's most iconic tree. It can live for 2,000 years and bears a fruit unique in the plant world: it self-desiccates on the tree. No heat-drying required. The pulp inside the hard outer shell naturally dries to a cream-coloured powder as moisture evaporates through the shell. This powder is sieved and packed without additives, preservatives or spray-drying. Lippia javanica (Zumbani in Shona, Umsuzwane in Ndebele) is a wild lemon-scented shrub growing across Zimbabwe's bushveld and grasslands. Its leaves have been harvested and brewed as a medicinal tea for generations used for coughs, colds, chest pains and fever. Research published by the University of Zimbabwe and international institutions has confirmed its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Crucially, it has higher radical scavenging activity than rooibos tea. Brew the tea

  1. Add 1 tbsp dried zumbani leaves to a pot with 500ml water
  2. Bring to a gentle boil, simmer 3–5 minutes
  3. Strain into a cup keep the leaves
  4. Add honey to taste. Blend with Makoni tea for a richer cup

Second life — two more uses

  • Reboil: Add 500ml fresh water to the strained leaves for a second, lighter cup
  • Into relish: Stir the spent leaves into a pot of mufushwa or vegetable relish as it cooks — the lemon-herb oils carry into the food

Bidens pilosa — known as mtsine in Shona and ucucuza in Ndebele, and widely called black jack across Zimbabwe — is one of the most versatile medicinal herbs in the African wild herb pharmacopoeia. It grows freely across Zimbabwe's bushveld, grasslands and cultivated margins. Traditionally brewed as a tea for malaria, diabetes management, wound healing, digestive complaints and immune support. Research across several African universities has confirmed its antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antitumour activities. Brew the tea

Elephantorrhiza elephantina — the dwarf elephant's root or underground tree is one of the most remarkable plants of the African Highveld. The vast majority of its biomass exists underground as a massive rhizome system; what emerges above ground each spring is merely its canopy. Fire and frost resistant, it has survived in Zimbabwe's grasslands for thousands of years. In Ndebele the plant is called intolwane; in Shona, ndorani. It is used across southern Africa for gastrointestinal disorders, wounds, sexually transmitted infections, immune deficiency and general body strengthening. Scientific studies have confirmed antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. Origin Zim uses only the rhizome powder — the most medicinally active part — sustainably harvested in Zimbabwe's Highveld.

As a decoction

Makoni tea is made from the leaves of Fadogia ancylantha — a wild perennial shrub growing on the rolling hillsides of Zimbabwe's Eastern Highlands, particularly around Nyanga in Manicaland. Named after Chief Makoni, according to tradition the tea was used by the Chief's warriors for stamina and recovery. The leaves are harvested when ripe, allowed to partially ferment giving the tea its characteristic warm, earthy-smoky flavour and golden-red colour and then dried. Research by the University of Zimbabwe confirmed its antidiabetic, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and found zinc content four to five times higher than rooibos tea. Origin Zim works with the Makoni Indigenous Tea Producers' Association and other community groups to ensure the harvest is sustainable and the income remains in the 11` community.

Cassia abbreviata — known as murumanyama or muremberembe in Shona and isihaqa in Ndebele is a medium-sized tree found across Zimbabwe's Mashonaland and Midlands regions. It has one of the broadest traditional use profiles of any Zimbabwean medicinal tree: gastrointestinal health, back pain, circulation support, anti-malarial use, sexually transmitted infections and as a general body tonic.   2. Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer for 10–15 minutes
  3. Strain into a cup keep the bark pieces
  4. Drink warm with honey. One cup daily is sufficient.
  5. You can also soak overnight in a cup of cold water

Second life — into the pot

  • After brewing, do not discard the bark pieces
  • Re soak and drink for a mild tonic
  • Drop them into a pot of meat stew, oxtail or bone broth as it simmers

The seeds of the baobab fruit have been roasted and brewed as a hot drink in Zimbabwe's communal areas for generations particularly in the Lowveld around Masvingo and Beitbridge where baobab trees are abundant and coffee was never available to rural communities. The seeds are extracted from the dried fruit, roasted over fire until dark and aromatic, then ground to a coarse powder. The taste is closest to a light-roast filter coffee earthy and slightly sweet. It does not need sugar to be enjoyable. Milk or plant milk rounds the flavour beautifully.

Are these herbs legal to import to the UK?

What is the difference between Zumbani and Makoni tea?

Zumbani (Lippia javanica) is a wild lemon-scented herb its dried leaves make an aromatic, citrusy tea best known for respiratory support. Makoni tea (Fadogia ancylantha) is made from fermented, dried leaves and has a warm, smoky, malty character closer to conventional black tea. What is Mtsine — is it really Black Jack, the garden weed?

Yes. Mtsine (Bidens pilosa) is the same plant known across Zimbabwe as black jack , the herb with the sticky seeds that cling to your clothes when you walk through the bush.
